Gracilaria is an agarophytic seaweed, meaning it is used to produce agar, a jelly-like substance composed of polysaccharides. Gracilaria species are found in warm waters globally, although they can also occur seasonally in temperate waters. However, they cannot tolerate temperatures below 10°C (50°F). Gracilaria is present in all oceans except the Arctic.
